John Costigan Earns BIG EAST Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
October 26, 1998 PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College sophomore back John Costigan of Dublin, Ireland was named BIG EAST Soccer Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, October 26. Costigan received his Defensive Player of the Week honor after anchoring the Friar defense in PC's two BIG EAST wins last week. On Oct. 21, the Friars defeated Notre Dame, 2-1, and earned their first win ever against the Fighting Irish. On Oct. 24, Costigan spearheaded the Friar defense which held 11th-ranked Georgetown to one goal in PC's 2-1 upset over the Hoyas. In 13 games this season, Costigan has recorded one goal and one assist. Costigan, the son of John and Deirdre Costigan, graduated from St. Joseph's C.B.S in Dublin in 1995. Providence, which has posted a 7-8 overall record and a 5-4 mark in BIG EAST play, has clinched a berth in the BIG EAST Playoffs for the first time since 1987. Providence, which has three games remaining in its regular-season schedule, will return to action on Wednesday, October 28 against Boston College at PC's Glay Field at 2:30 p.m.
