PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Fresh off its victory over No. 13/11 Connecticut on Wednesday, the Providence College men's soccer team will host West Virginia on Saturday, October 11 at 1:00 p.m. in a BIG EAST Conference match at Glay Field. In their 1-0 win over UConn, the Friars (4-4-3, 2-4-1 BIG EAST) scored in the 35th minute as sophomore Matt Marcin's (Wilmington, Del.) strike from 15 yards out found the upper right corner of the net. Senior Ryan Maduro (Bristol, R.I.) assisted on the goal. It marked Maduro's 19th career assist, which moved him into sole possession of fourth place all-time at Providence in career assists. Junior Timothy Ritter (Weston, Mass.) leads the team in scoring with two goals and two assists, while Maduro has one goal and three assists. In goal, junior Timothy Murray (Haverhill, Mass.) has a 0.77 goals against average and a .780 save percentage.
The Mountaineers (3-4-4, 2-1-3 BIG EAST) are coming off a 1-1 double overtime tie against Pittsburgh on Wednesday, October 8 in Morgantown, W.Va. Alex Yost scored in the 38th minute to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead, but the Panthers scored on a penalty kick in the 85th minute to force overtime. Zach Johnson had eight saves for West Virginia. Prior to that match, the Mountaineers posted a 1-0 win at Connecticut on October 3 as Alex Silva scored the lone goal in the 30th minute. Paul Paradise leads the team in scoring with two goals and two assists. Johnson has played in every game and has posted a 0.50 goals against average.
The Friars are 4-8 all-time against the Mountaineers. The last time Providence defeated West Virginia was during the 2003 season when it posted a 1-0 victory in Morgantown.
