BIG EAST Matchup with Xavier Up Next for Men’s Soccer

The Providence College men’s soccer team travels to Cincinnati, Ohio to take on the Xavier University Musketeers on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 7:00 p.m.

Scouting the Musketeers
Xavier enters Tuesday’s game with a 5-2-2 overall record and a 1-1-0 BIG EAST mark. On Saturday (Sept. 23) the Musketeers fell by a score of 3-0 at St. John’s. Highlights for the Musketeers so far this year include a 1-0 overtime victory over then #9 Georgetown (Sept. 16) and a 3-2 double overtime road win at then #22 Boston College (Sept. 4). Junior Simen Hestnes leads the team offensively with three goals and five assists (11 points). Redshirt sophomore Samson Sergi has a team-leading five goals. In net, redshirt freshman Zachary Nelson has started all nine games and recorded three shutouts. He holds a 1.03 goals against average and has made 24 saves.

Scouting the Friars
The Friars hold a 2-6-1 overall record and a 0-1-1 record in the BIG EAST. On Tuesday, Providence battled UConn and eventually fell 1-0. The Huskies scored the game-winner the 82nd minute. Senior Mac Steeves (Needham, Mass.) and sophomore Danny Griffin (Wethersfield, Conn.) each registered a team-high two shots on goal in the loss. Colin Miller (Bel Air, Md.) made six saves in the loss. Steeves is currently the team leader in shots (45), goals (four), and assists (three). In net, Miller enters the game with a 2-4-1 record, an .800 save percentage and a 0.92 goals against average. Twelve different Friars have recorded at least a point so far in 2017. Overall, the team is averaging 1.11 goals scored per game and 12.0 shots per game.

Close Games Galore
Since September 9, no game for the Friars has been decided by more than a goal. In the stretch of five games, the four losses have all been by a single goal. The other game in the stretch was a 0-0 tie with BIG EAST foe DePaul. Both that game and the 2-1 loss to Boston College were contests that went into double overtime.

Steeves Shines
Steeves continues to lead the team in all scoring categories. He is first in points (11), goals (four) and assists (three). He currently sits in third place in career points (74) for the Friars, just behind former teammate Julian Gressel (80). With his goal against Boston College, Steeves passed Gressel to become the second all-time leading goal scorer in Providence history. He now has 31 career goals and sits behind John Farren (62).

Midseason Best XI
New England Soccer Journal released a midseason best XI on Wednesday (Sept. 27). Both Steeves and Griffin were featured in the “dream team” from New England. Dartmouth, UMass Lowell and New Hampshire were the other schools to have multiple players featured.

Tracking Twelve
The Friars have had 12 different players register a point through nine games in 2017. Seven of those Friars have recorded multiple points. Steeves, Joao Serrano (Evora, Portugal), Liam Wilson (Sussex, England), Braden Kline (Lancaster, Pa.), Brendan Constantine (Glastonbury, Conn.), Alex DaCosta (Bristol, R.I.) and Steven Kilday (Marshfield, Mass.) are the multi-point scorers.

Duncan On D
Freshman Malcolm Duncan (Toronto, Ontario) has started all nine games so far this season and totaled 836 minutes in the Friar backline. He is one of only two freshmen to see time so far in the 2017 campaign. Duncan recorded his first collegiate point on an assist against Harvard on Sept. 9.

Up Next
The Friars play the final game of their three-game road trip with a BIG EAST matchup at Marquette University. The game is set for 1:00 p.m. on Oct. 7 at Valley Fields.
