The 2013 Ocean State Soccer Classic All-Tournament Team and Most Outstanding Player award winners were announced on Monday afternoon (Sept. 9). Brown sophomore midfielder Tariq Akeel and Providence junior midfielder Phil Towler (Cumbria, England) each earned Most Outstanding Player honors.
The All-Tournament team and Most Outstanding Player awards were selected by the head coaches of the four participating teams including Brown University, Bryant University, Providence College and the University of Rhode Island.
With Brown and Providence playing to a 1-1 tie on Sunday (Sept. 8), the two teams ended the tournament as co-champions after each squad accumulated four points on a win and a tie. Rhode Island placed third with three points, while Bryant finished fourth.
Towler scored Providence’s goal against 20th-ranked Brown, helping keep the Friars unbeaten on the year at 3-0-1. In addition to Towler, junior defender Brandon Adler (Montville, N.J.), freshman midfielder Dominik Machado (Attleboro, Mass.) and red-shirt junior Markus Naglestad (Kristiansand, Norway) were also named to the 2013 Ocean State Classic All-Tournament team. It was the second consecutive year Adler earned All-Tournament honors.
It was the fourth consecutive year that Rhode Island’s four NCAA Div. I men’s soccer teams have played in the Ocean State Soccer Classic and the first that was played with predetermined matchups due to construction on the Providence College campus.
