PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence Men's Soccer Game Notes Vs. URI in PDF Format
The Providence College men's soccer team will host the University of Rhode Island on Tuesday, September 9 at 3:00 p.m. at Glay Field. The match will be televised on Cox Sports and aired via tape delay on Thursday, September 11 at 7:00 p.m. It also will be aired via tape delay on Sportsnet NY on September 13 at 4:00 p.m. The Friars (2-0-1), who defeated Sacred Heart (1-0 on 8/29) and fourth-ranked Boston College (1-0 on 9/1), are coming off a 1-1 double overtime tie against Holy Cross on Friday, September 5 in Worcester, Mass. Junior Timothy Ritter (Weston, Mass.) scored in the 34th minute to give the Friars a 1-0 halftime lead. However, the Crusaders evened the score in the 84th minute on a goal by Tom Wilhelm and ended PC goalkeeper Timothy Murray's shutout streak at 263:33. Murray finished with a season-high five saves. PC's 2-0-1 mark is its best start since 2005 when the team began the season with a school best nine-match unbeaten streak (4-0-5) en route to making the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history. The Rams (1-1), who have not played since August 31, are looking to bounce back after a 2-0 loss to New Hampshire in the championship game of the UNH Nike Classic. URI advanced to the championship game with a 2-1 win over Maine on August 29. Josh Sousa and Dwayne Williams each scored less than nine minutes apart in the second half as the Rams rallied for the win. URI leads the all-time series against the Friars, 26-8-4, including a 3-0-1 mark over the last four seasons. The Friars' last win over the Rams came on September 9, 2003, a 2-1 decision in Providence. Of the Friars' eight all-time wins against the Rams, five have come in Kingston and three in Providence. The Friars have a 3-16-2 mark versus the Rams in Providence and a 5-10-2 mark in Kingston.
