    Sept. 3, 2010

Just yesterday, The Friars' preseason finally came to a close and the hard work they had put in since August sixteenth definitely paid off! The team endured two weeks of a grueling preseason that included double sessions almost every day in less than inviting conditions. The heat was extreme and the only three rainy days in August just happened to be during the team's training sessions! Still, the Friars worked hard as they began to mold themselves into a 2010 team that has high hopes of making Providence College history this season. Unfortunately for the Friars, they were only able to play one tune-up match before the start of the regular season. The team's scheduled match versus Franklin Pierce was cancelled due to inclement weather, so the Friars had only Boston College to play before their home opener versus the University of Rhode Island. The Friars dropped the decision versus BC, 3-2, on a last minute goal by the Eagles. For their first time out on the game pitch, it was not a bad result for the team. Six days later, the Friars kicked off their season at home, versus their state rivals, the URI Rams. They were unlucky to concede an own goal in the first seventy seconds of the game but just as Friar teams of the past, they were able to stay calm, play their game and fight back to get back on top of the game. On a very hot day at Glay Field, they were able to claw and scrap their way back into the game and in the end, earn a much needed and deserved 2-1 win. This was a great start for the Friars because, in an early test of grit, will and determination, they were able to find a way to win the game. I hope the Friars can carry the momentum from this hard-fought opening day triumph and win the Ocean State Classic on Monday! Good luck Providence and keep up the good work!
