MEN'S SOCCER vs. SACRED HEART AT PROVIDENCE COLLEGE - Saturday, September 4 - 3:30 p.m. at Glay Field

Sacred Heart University (0-0-0) - Sacred Heart opens its season on Saturday against the Friars. It will be the sixth meeting all-time between the two teams and the first meeting since 1972. The Friars hold a 4-0-1 mark all-time versus the Pioneers. In the last game between the two teams, PC defeated Sacred Heart, 4-2, at Providence College ... Last season, Sacred Heart posted a 0-19 record. This year will mark the Pioneers' first season of Division I play. The team will compete in the Northeast Conference. Junior midfielder Chad Allegro (Enfield, Conn.) and junior forward Mike Schmidt (Stanley, N.Y.) will be looked upon to provide offensive punch for the Pioneers.

Providence College (1-0-0) - The Friars opened the season on Wednesday, September 1 with a 3-1 victory against Boston College in North Andover, Mass. The win marked the first time ever the Friars opened the season with a BIG EAST win and it also marked the first time the team opened with a victory since 1994. The Friars were led on offense by junior forward Kevin Jones (Westford, Mass.). Jones registered one goal and one assist. PC's other goals were scored by senior midfielder Michael Eisenhut (Hanover, Mass.) and sophomore back Kempes Corbally (Dublin, Ireland). For Corbally, who scored the Friars' second goal on a direct kick, it was his first collegiate tally. Sophomore goalkeeper Danny Glynn (Manchester, England) recorded seven saves in his first game as a Friar. Glynn transferred to Providence after a strong rookie year at Fairfield where he established a school record for shutouts (nine) and posted a 14-4-1 mark ... Last season, Jones led the team in scoring with nine goals and four assists. The Friars finished the 1998 season with a 9-9-1 mark and qualified for the BIG EAST Playoffs where the squad was defeated in double overtime by Georgetown, 1-0.
