Sept. 1, 2014
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
Providence College men’s soccer red-shirt senior Markus Naglestad (Kristiansand, Norway) was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the conference on Monday, Sept. 1.
Naglestad helped the Friars secure a victory over in-state rival Rhode Island on Aug. 30 after he scored four of the five Friar goals. The honor is Naglestad’s first career weekly BIG EAST honor and the first Friar to be named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week since Sept. 23, 2013 (Fabio Machado).
Three of the four goals came within two minutes of each other (75:11, 76:07 and 77:11), breaking the NCAA Division I men’s soccer record for the fastest three consecutive goals by the same player. The record was set on Oct. 20, 1985 by John Stone of SIU Edwardsville after he scored three goals within 2:15 of each other. The feat also marked the first time a Friar scored at least three goals in a game since Oct. 13, 2012 (Wilder Arboleda).
The Friars return to action for another home game on Sept. 5 when they take on Holy Cross. The game is scheduled to kick-off at 7:00 p.m.
