The Providence College men’s soccer team opens its 2014 season against Bryant at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29 in Smithfield, R.I. The game will serve as the season-opener for both teams. The Friars will then play their first home game on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 7:00 p.m. at the Ray Treacy Track against in-state rival Rhode Island.

Scouting the Bulldogs
Friday’s game will serve as the home opener for Bryant. During the 2013 season, the Bulldogs advanced to the final of the Northeast Conference Tournament. They finished the season with a 7-9-2 overall record and a 4-2-1 conference record. Bryant returns the bulk of their 2013 roster for the 2014 season, including their top four scorers.

Scouting the Rams
Rhode Island opens their season against Seton Hall the Friday before their match-up against Providence. The Rams, a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference, finished the 2013 season with a 0-8-0 conference record and a 2-12-0 overall record.
Last Season for the Friars
Last season, the Friars advanced to the final of the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 2010 and third time in program history. Providence faced Marquette in the championship game, falling 3-2. The Friars also earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time in program history. The team advanced to the second round of the tournament after defeating Penn, 3-1, in penalty kicks in the opening round. The second round game saw Providence drop a 3-1 decision to Maryland.
Gressel Named To Preseason All-BIG EAST Team
The BIG EAST Men's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll and Preseason All-BIG EAST Team were released on Aug. 19. Sophomore Julian Gressel (Neustadt an der Aisch, Germany) was among 15 players named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Providence was also selected to finish fifth out of the 10 teams in the league.
Head Coach Craig Stewart announced on May 5 that red-shirt senior Keasel Broome (Claymont, Del.) and seniors Brandon Adler (Montville, N.J.) and Phil Towler (Cumbria, England) have been named team captains for the 2014 season.
Five players have joined the Friars for the 2014 season. The group of incoming players includes Lukas Ritzer (Sutton, Mass.), James Townsend (Attleboro, Mass.), Daniel Neustädter (Mainz, Germany), Colin Miller (Bel Air, Md.) and Thomas Dieffenthaller (Palm Harbor, Fla.).
After the home game against Rhode Island, the Friars will play a home game against Holy Cross on Sept. 5 at 7:00 p.m. followed by an away game at Quinnipiac on Sept. 7 at 4:00 p.m.
