Men's Soccer Ranked No. 12 in United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men’s soccer team enters the 2017 season ranked No. 12 in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll, as released on Aug. 4. Providence is the highest ranked of the three BIG EAST schools to be selected in the 25-team poll.

Last season, the Friars finished 15-7-0 and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight before a dramatic double overtime loss to North Carolina. The team also captured its first ever BIG EAST regular season championship.

Creighton enters the season at No. 14, after finishing 13-7-3 last year and appearing in the BIG EAST championship game. The Bluejays fell to Butler, 2-1, but earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Creighton advanced to the Third Round before falling to Providence, 2-1.

Butler, chosen at No. 25, finished with a 13-5-2 overall record and captured the BIG EAST Tournament Championship with a 2-1 victory over Creighton. The Bulldogs were ousted from the NCAA Second Round by SIUE in a penalty shootout.

The Friars kick off the 2017 campaign with two opponents ranked in the top five of the poll. First, Providence takes on No. 4 North Carolina at Elon University at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 25. The Friars then travel to No. 2 Wake Forest for a matchup on Aug. 27 at 7:00 p.m.

BIG EAST men’s soccer preseason coaches’ poll and preseason awards will be announced on Wednesday, Aug. 16.
