PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College men’s soccer Head Coach Craig Stewart announced the 2013 schedule, which kicks off on Tuesday, Aug. 30 with a 1:00 p.m. home game versus Quinnipiac.
All told, the Friars will play nine regular-season home games and seven road games in 2013. Providence will face seven opponents who made the 2012 NCAA Tournament field, including national runner-up Georgetown.
After Quinnipiac, the Friars are slated to face Holy Cross (Sept. 1), Harvard (Sept. 12), Northeastern (Sept. 14), Boston University (Sept. 20) and Virginia (Sept. 24) in non-conference action.
In addition, Providence will play in the fourth-annual Ocean State Classic, with an opening round game at Rhode Island (Sept. 6). The final round of the tournament will take place at Providence College, with the Providence-URI winner taking on the winner of the Brown-Bryant match. The Friars have advanced to the title game in each of the past three Ocean State Classic Tournaments.
Providence closes the regular-season with nine straight BIG EAST matches in the newly constituted league, which includes home games against Georgetown (Oct. 9) and Creighton (Nov. 8), who combined to make up half of last season’s College Cup field. Other BIG EAST teams that made the 2012 NCAA Tournament include St. John’s (Oct. 5) and Marquette (Oct. 19). The Friars will also face new BIG EAST members Xavier (Oct. 26) and Butler (Nov. 2) for the first time in program history.
On Nov.12, the postseason begins with the BIG EAST Quarterfinals, which will be held at campus sites. Four teams will then advance to the BIG EAST Championship (Nov. 15 and 17) at PPL Park in Philadelphia, Pa. PPL Park, which is playing host to the 2013 College Cup (Dec. 13 and 15), is home to the Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer (MLS).
