PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College men’s soccer head coach Craig Stewart announced the program’s 2017 season schedule and the Friars’ 2017 roster today [June 1].
The Friars will face six opponents who competed in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, including two teams who played in the 2016 College Cup.
Providence will open the season with a match against North Carolina on Friday, August 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Elon, N.C. The Friars and the Tar Heels last played on Dec. 2, 2016 in the NCAA Quarterfinals, when Providence fell in double overtime (1-0).
The Friars continue on to play another ACC opponent, Wake Forest, on Sunday, August 27 at 7:00 p.m. on Winston-Salem, N.C. The Demon Deacons appeared in the 2016 NCAA Championship game.
Providence continues non-conference play with a Friday night tilt at the University of Rhode Island on Sept. 1, 2017.
The Friars will open the season at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium on Monday, Sept. 4 at 7:00 p.m. against cross-state rival Bryant. Providence will also host Harvard on Sept. 9, at 7:00 p.m. before opening BIG EAST play against DePaul on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 7:00 p.m.
Providence will travel to Newton, Mass. to play its third ACC opponent, Boston College, at 6:00 p.m. on Sept. 19.
The Friars will then host Butler at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23 in a BIG EAST match up.
Providence kicks off another stretch of road games at Connecticut on Sept. 26, at Xavier on Sept. 30, and at Marquette on Oct. 7.
The Friars return home for three games, hosting cross-town rival Brown on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 7:00 p.m., Seton Hall on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 4:00 p.m., and Creighton on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 7:00 p.m.
Providence will play two more BIG EAST road matches, traveling to Georgetown on Oct. 25 for a 3:00 p.m. kick off and to Villanova on Oct. 28 for a 1:00 p.m. game.
The team will play its last regular season game on Nov. 1, at 7:00 p.m. at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
The BIG EAST Tournament will begin on Nov. 4 with the quarterfinals, hosted by the highest seeded team in each match-up. The BIG EAST semifinals will be played on Nov. 8 and the final on Nov. 12. The semifinal games and final also will be played at the highest seeded team’s home venue.
With the schedule set for the Friars 2017 campaign, Stewart remarked that the schedule is “Arguably the most difficult regular season schedule in program history. The staff and players are looking forward to the challenge ahead.”
Stewart also announced the 2017 roster, returning 24 student-athletes and adding five incoming freshmen who have been previously announced.
The Friars return goalkeeper Colin Miller (Bel Air, Md.), who finished the season with a 14-2 record and earned BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year honors. Mark Jecewiz (Smithtown, N.Y.), an All-BIG EAST First Team and All-Great Lakes Region First Team selection leads the Friars’ back line. Joao Serrano (Evora, Portugal), Danny Griffin (Wethersfield, Conn.), and Liam Wilson (Sussex, England) who each earned BIG EAST All-Freshman Team honors, return to the field as sophomores.
