Tim Murray and Danette Doetzel Named BIG EAST/Aeropostale Scholar Athletes

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

Providence College men's soccer senior standout Timothy Murray (Haverhill, Mass.) and women's cross country/track All-American Danette Doetzel (Macklin, Saskatchewan) were named 2008-09 BIG EAST/Aeropostale Scholar Athletes. Each received a $2,000 scholarship to be used toward graduate studies.

Murray, who has a 3.20 GPA in accounting, played in all 19 games for the Friars last season and posted a 0.86 goals against average and a .776 save percentage. In addition, Murray was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week on October 13 after registering consecutive shutouts over No. 13/11 Connecticut and West Virginia.

Doetzel, who has a 3.05 GPA in marketing, recently won Providence College's Female Athlete of the Year honors for Individual Sports for the second-straight season. In 2008-09, Doetzel captured All-America honors in cross country and indoor track in the 5,000 meters. She also claimed the NCAA Northeast Regional Cross Country title and the BIG EAST Indoor Track 3,000 meter individual title for the second-straight time in her career at Providence. Doetzel also competed in the 5,000 meter event at the BIG EAST Indoor Championship and registered a second-place finish. In the early stages of the 2009 outdoor track season, Doetzel qualified for the NCAA Regional Championship in the 5,000 meters with a personal-best time of 15:46.76.

The BIG EAST/Aeropostale Scholar-Athlete Awards were established to recognize student-athletes who have achieved success in the classroom and on the field. University of South Florida men's soccer standout Zak Boggs was named the 2008-09 BIG EAST Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year while University of Connecticut field hockey player Jennifer Kleinhans won on the women's side. Both will receive a $4,000 scholarship. Each of the 16 member BIG EAST schools also had a male and female scholar-athlete award winner named with each receiving $2,000 to be used towards graduate studies. The selection was made by the conference's Academic Affairs Committee.
