Julian Gressel Selected No. 8 In The MLS Draft

Jan. 13, 2017

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Julian Gressel (Neustadt an der Aisch, Germany), who captained the Providence College men’s soccer team, was selected in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. Gressel was selected to the Atlanta United FC in the First Round and eighth overall.

As the eighth overall pick Gressel became the highest Friar selected in the MLS SuperDraft. In 2013 Marc Cintron was selected in the second round and 34th overall by the NY Red Bulls.

“First of all, I have to thank my family, especially my mother, for making a lot of sacrifices and supporting me every step of the way,” Gressel said. “Second, I have to say a huge thank you to the coaching staff at Providence College, all of my teammates, and the whole Friar family. I would not have been able to do this without the trust and help of everybody in Friartown. I am now very excited to join Atlanta FC and take the next step in my career. Go Friars!”

Providence now has seven players to be drafted into the MLS. Entering the night, the most recent Friar drafted into the MLS was Keasel Broome, who was selected in the third round (No. 46) in 2015 to the San Jose Earthquakes.

"We are very proud and excited for Julian to be drafted today in the first round of the MLS draft,” said Head Coach Craig Stewart. “He was a model student-athlete during his time at Providence College and was a huge part of the success we have had over the past four years. He will always be part of the Friar family and we wish him all the best at Atlanta United and for the next chapter in his soccer career"
