Providence College men’s soccer senior Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.) has been invited to the 2011 adidas Major League Soccer (MLS) Player Combine, which will take place on January 7-11 at Central Broward Regional Park in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Marcin is among 54 college seniors from 36 NCAA Division I schools that will participate in the annual event. The annual combine is a prelude to the MLS SuperDraft which will be held on January 13 in Baltimore, Md.
In 2010, Marcin finished as the team’s leading scorer with career highs in goals (10), assists (4) and points (24). The 10 goals were the most by a Friar since 1991. In addition, four of Marcin’s 10 goals were match winners. He was named to the NSCAA All-Northeast Region First Team, the All-BIG EAST First Team and earned BIG EAST All-Tournament Team honors. His 22 career goals are tied for fifth all-time at Providence, while the 53 points rank seventh.
Marcin led the Friars to one of their most successful seasons in program history. Providence finished with a 13-6-3 overall record, one win shy of tying a school record for most victories. The Friars also advanced to the BIG EAST Championship final where they tied No. 1 Louisville, 1-1, in double overtime, but fell in a penalty kick shootout. Providence then earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament and hosted its first ever NCAA Championship match. The Friars defeated Saint Peter’s, 6-2, on November 18 to advance to the second round for the second time ever. On their way to the NCAAs, the Friars had a 10-game unbeaten streak (8-0-2), including seven consecutive wins.
