PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's soccer team defeated the University of Delaware, 2-0, on Thursday night in a NCAA First Round contest on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. With the win, the Friars will advance to the Second Round and secure a date with the No. 1 overall seed Maryland Terrapins on Sunday (Nov. 20).
Providence improves to 13-6 overall with the win, while the Blue Hens concluded their season at 12-8-1. Blue Hens goalkeeper Todd Morton made five saves, while Colin Miller improved to 12-1 for the Friars in making four saves.
The Friars struck first in the eighth minute of play on a seemingly innocent play. Senior Julian Gressel (Neustadt an der Aisch, Germany) sent a pass too far ahead into the box that goalkeeper Todd Morton tried to clear. A miscommunication between Morton and defender John Schroeder led to Morton's clear deflecting back towards his own net and redshirt junior Brendan Reardon (Nesconset, N.Y.) finished off for his first goal as a Friar to put Providence up 1-0.
After a flurry of chances from Delaware, the Friars nearly connected once again in the 33rd minute off a set play from Joao Serrano into the box that Liam Wilson (Sussex, England) dove and got a foot on, but Morton extended to make the save and collect the rebound before the Friars could capitalize.
Through 45 minutes, shots were even at six apiece with both goalkeepers making two saves each. The Friars held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The second half yielded no scoring into the 71st minute as each team exchanged attacks, but both Morton and Miller turned away the chances on goal.
Providence grabbed an insurance marker in the 71st minute as Alex DaCosta (Bristol, R.I.) sent in Gressel alone on Morton and the senior made no mistake in depositing his 12th goal of the season into the back of the net to make it a 2-0 Friars lead.
The win marked the fifth NCAA Tournament victory for Head Coach Craig Stewart while at the helm of the Friars.
Up next, the Friars will travel to the University of Maryland for a NCAA Second Round matchup on Sunday (Nov. 20).
