PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team hosted conference foe Butler on Saturday, Nov. 2 at the turf field located at Ray Treacy Track in Providence, R.I. The Friars defeated the Bulldogs, 3-2, to clinch a berth in the 2013 BIG EAST Tournament. Providence improves to 10-4-2 (5-3-0 BIG EAST) while Butler moves to 9-7-1 (3-5-0 BIG EAST).
The Friars dominated possession in the first half and generated 13 shots in the first 45 minutes of play. Butler found a hole in the Friars defense in the 15th minute when Vincent Mitchell found the back of the net. The assist on the goal was awarded to Jordan Burt. Providence generated several goal scoring opportunities, landing 7-of-16 shots on frame, including three ricochets off of the post.
Providence evened the game at 1-1 on a give-and-go connection between junior Fabio Machado (Santa Caterina, Brazil) and freshman Julian Gressel(Neustadt an der Aisch, Germany). Gressel started the play in transition at midfield. The two worked their way up the right flank when Gressel serviced a cross that Machado finished past Butler's keeper, it marked his third goal of the season.
The Friars took a 2-1 lead in the 63rd minute when freshman Mac Steeves(Needham, Mass.) buried a free kick from the top of the 18 yard box, it marked his second goal of the season.
Providence increased its lead to 3-1 in the 77th minute when freshman Nick Sailor (Bloomfield, Conn.) finished a feed from sophomore Manny Andrade(Boston, Mass.). Andrade serviced a low cross from the right side of the field that Sailor collected in the box. His strike beat Butler's keeper to mark his second goal of the season. Butler pulled within one, 3-2, in the 87th minute when David Goldsmith finished a pass from Jordan Burt to the lower left corner, but that would be as close as they would get. It was Goldsmith's 11th goal of the season. Providence out shot Butler, 24-12, and the Friars held the advantage in corners, 16-3.
Red shirt junior Keasel Broome(Claymont, Del.) played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded one save in the Friar victory.
Providence concludes regular season play on Friday, Nov. 8 when it hosts Creighton for a 3:00 p.m. match at the turf field located at Ray Treacy Track in Providence, R.I.
