Men's Soccer Falls to 13th Ranked St. Johns 2-1
Oct. 17, 1999 The St. John's University Red Storm defeated the Providence College Friars, 2-1, in men's BIG EAST soccer action at Providence, R.I. on Sunday, October 17. St. John's sophomore midfielder Jeff Matteo scored the game-winning goal at the 82:24 mark, on a 20-yard strike assisted by Oscar Aruez and Pablo Budna. St. John's opened the scoring at the 10:50 mark, when junior defenseman Omar Chavez took control of a free kick outside the box and crossed it to junior forward Edmund Kingston for the goal. Providence tied the game when senior midfielder Andy McConville (Madison,Conn.) converted a penalty kick at the 22:11 mark. St. John's goalkeeper Jeff Stoklosa made four stops for the Red Storm. Providence freshman goalie Michael Cardenas (Framingham, Mass.) recorded 7 saves in the loss. With the win, St. John's improved to 8-2-3 overall and 4-1-3 in the BIG EAST, while Providence fell to 4-8-1 overall and 3-6-0 in league play. Providence College returns to action on Saturday, October 23 at Georgetown in Washington, D.C. at 1:00 p.m. at Providence, R.I.
