CHICAGO, Ill. - The twenty third-ranked Providence College men's soccer team earned a 1-0 overtime win at conference foe DePaul on Saturday, Oct. 12 in Chicago, Ill. The afternoon tilt was decided by a Manny Andrade(Boston, Mass.) header in the 107th minute. The Friars improve to 8-2-2 (3-1-0 BIG EAST), while DePaul falls to 4-7-2 (0-3-1 BIG EAST).
Providence posed as an offensive threat in the first half, out shooting DePaul, 8-2. In addition the Friars held an advantage in corners, 5-0. The Friars and Blue Demons were unable to find the back of the net and the game reached halftime at 0-0. The second 45 minutes of play were scoreless. The Blue Demons out shot the Friars 10-3 and held the advantage in corners, 8-2. Regulation ended in a 0-0 tie and the game went to overtime.
Providence then struck in the 107th minute when Andrade buried a header. Freshman Julian Gressel(Neustadt an der Aisch) serviced a cross that was finished by Andrade to propel the Friars to victory. The goal marked Andrade's second on the season and it was Gressel's second assist. Gressel and Andrade top the Friar scoring column with 10 and eight points, respectively.
Red shirt junior Keasel Broome(Claymont, Del.) played all 106:37 minutes in goal and finished the game with six saves for the Friars.
Providence returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 19 when it hosts Marquette in an afternoon game at 1:00 p.m. The game will be played on the turf field located at the Ray Treacy Track.
