PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team was defeated by Marquette, 3-1, Saturday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference match at Glay Field. Friar freshman Marcos Ugarte (Providence, R.I.) scored a first-half goal to even the match, but the Golden Eagles scored the next two to earn the win.

Marquette (5-5-2, 3-0-0 BIG EAST) opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Anthony Selvaggi played the ball over the top to Andy Huftalin at the top of the 18 yard box. Huftalin then settled the ball before firing a left-footed shot that bounced off the cross bar and into the net.

Providence (6-4-1, 1-1-1 BIG EAST) responded in the 23rd minute and evened the match at 1-1. Sophomore Greg Davis (Jamaica, N.Y.) played a long ball over the top to Ugarte down the left side. Ugarte raced into the 18-yard box, beat his defender and fired a left-footed shot into the net. It marked his third goal of the season which is tied for the team lead. The Golden Eagles regained the lead (2-1) in the 32nd minute when Chris Madsen was able to elude his defender with a pair of moves and then scored with his right foot from 12 yards out.

Just 1:12 into the second half, junior Marc Cintron (Piscataway, N.J.) nearly scored the equalizer for Providence. Cintron took a long ball off his chest inside the 18-yard box, fended off a defender and toe-poked the ball past Marquette goalkeeper David Check, who had come off his line. However, a Marquette defender slid and used his left foot to knock the ball away as it was about to roll into the right corner. The Golden Eagles increased their lead to 3-1 in the 54th minute when C. Nortey scored on a diving header for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.

The Friars finished with a 12-8 advantage in shots, including a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. PC senior goalkeeper Jhojan Obando (Kissimmee, Fla.) had one save, while Check posted four stops for the Golden Eagles. .

The Friars are back in action when they travel to Storrs, Conn. on Wednesday, October 12 for a 7:30 p.m. match against No. 1 Connecticut.
