Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The No. 17/20 Providence College men's soccer team (3-1-3, 1-1-1 BIG EAST) suffered its first loss of the season as No. 19/16 Louisville (6-1-1, 1-1-0 BIG EAST) defeated the Friars, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in a BIG EAST match at Glay Field.

The Cardinals, who recorded their first ever win against the Friars, took advantage of a set piece from the left side of the box to quickly jump ahead, 1-0, in the eighth minute. Aaron Clapham drove a cross to the back post to John Jonke, who used the top of his right foot from three yards out to score his first goal of the season. It marked the first goal that the Friars have allowed at home this season and just the second overall. Just over 10 minutes later, Louisville nearly increased its lead to two goals when Gerardo Chavez was in on a breakaway, by PC goalkeeper (Haverhill, Mass.) was able to make a diving save on Chavez's right-footed shot. Murray finished with three saves.

The Friars created scoring chances in the first half and senior Ryan Maduro (Bristol, R.I.) nearly evened the score in the 25th minute, but his shot from 16 yards out glanced off the left post and Louisville goalkeeper Andre Boudreaux was able to pounce on the rebound. Providence finished with 10-5 shot advantage in the first half and forced Boudreaux to make all his three saves in the first 45 minutes.

Providence is back in action on Friday, September 26 with a match at Syracuse beginning at 7:00 p.m.
