Men's Soccer Defeated At Rutgers, 2-1, In Double Overtime

    PISCATAWAY, N.J. - - The Providence College men's soccer team was defeated, 2-1, in double overtime Friday night in the BIG EAST opener in Piscataway, N.J. With the loss, the Friars fell to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the Conference. Rutgers improved to a 3-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.

    After a scoreless first half, the Scarlet Knights took a 1-0 lead just 50 seconds into the second half when Ibrahim Kamara scored his third goal of the season. Chris Edwards played a pass to Kamara who beat two defenders before firing a shot into the top left corner to give Rutgers the edge. The Friars scored the equalizer in the 61st minute as junior Nick Cianci (West Hartford, Conn.) scored his first goal of the season. Rutgers' goalkeeper Jake Grinkevich was able to stop Cianci's initial shot, however, the rebound came right back to Cianci who headed the ball in the net and even the score, 1-1.

    Yannick Salmon scored with 1:09 remaining in double overtime to give Rutgers the win. Bryant Knibbs played the ball to Salmon, whose header beat PC goalkeeper Timothy Murray (Haverhill, Mass.). The Friars finished with a 15-14 shot advantage, including a 7-5 edge in shots on goal.

    The Friars are back in action on Sunday, September 20 at 3:00 p.m. when they play at Villanova.
