PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
Senior All-American Ryan Maduro (Bristol, R.I.) scored his first goal of the season as the Providence College men's soccer team defeated Holy Cross, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Glay Field.
Sophomore Jonathan Medcalf (Tulsa, Okla.) setup the lone goal of the match in the 18th minute as he played a through ball to Maduro, who was able to beat Holy Cross goalkeeper Thomas Booth to his right and tuck the ball into the open net.
Providence held a 7-4 shot advantage in the first half, but Holy Cross created the first scoring chance of the match in the third minute when Kyle Miller fired shot from five yards out and Timothy Murray (Haverhill, Mass.) was able to make a diving save to his right. The Friars responded less than 30 seconds later as Medcalf fired a shot from the top of the 18-yard box, but Booth was there to make the stop. In the 13th minute, senior Michael Narciso (Livingston, N.J.) sent a long was Medcalf was able to run onto it before ripping a shot that missed wide. One minute later, Maduro drilled a 25-yard shot and just missed over the crossbar. However, Maduro would not be denied just a few minutes later to help the Friars improve to 3-2-0.
Both teams created a few chances in the second half, including Medcalf who ripped a volley off a corner kick in the 86th minute, but Booth made the save on the play. Booth finished with five saves, while Murray stopped three shots to earn his second shutout of the season.
The Friars are back in action on Friday, September 21 when they travel to Chicago, Ill. to face DePaul in the BIG EAST Conference opener.
