PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

The Friars captured the first game of the RI Capital City Classic on Sept. 9, defeating the SMU Mustangs, 1-0. The Friars improve to 3-2 and the Mustangs move to 2-3.

After the first half neither team was able to convert and the game remained scoreless. The Friars held the edge in shots (6-1) and SMU’s Michael Nelson was forced to make two saves.

Providence sustained offensive pressure and its two best chances came from Alex DaCosta (Bristol, R.I.) in the 37th and 40th minutes. DaCosta received the ball in the box, taking a quick shot that Nelson dove to block but gave up the rebound to Markus Jacobsen (Oslo, Norway) who shot just over the crossbar. DaCosta had another point blank chance, but Nelson deflected the ball from going in.

The Friars continued to challenge the Mustangs offensively with 11 shots in the second half and seven shots on goal, while SMU tallied four shots.

Danny Griffin (Wethersfield, Conn.) tallied his second-consecutive game-winning goal in the 77th minute after receiving the ball from Brendan Constantine (Glastonbury, Conn.) and ran down the sideline with the ball. Griffin took a shot to the far left post that beat Nelson and deflected into the goal.

Colin Miller (Bel Air, Md.) earned his second start in goal in as many games for the Friars. Miller collected one save in the game in a one-on-one with SMU’s Stanton Garcia. The red shirt sophomore earned his second shutout in his second career game.

The Friars outshot the Mustangs 17-5 and were even in corner kicks (5-5).
