PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College sophomore forward Todd Stigliano (Newington, Conn.) scored in the 109th minute as the Friars defeated West Virginia University, 2-1, in overtime in men's BIG EAST soccer action at Providence, R.I. on Saturday, September 9.

The Friars took a 1-0 lead at 12:53 when Kevin Jones (Westford, Mass.) converted on a penalty kick. West Virginia's Craig Patton evened the game at 1-1 as he blasted a shot that deflected off a Friar defender past PC junior goalkeeper Danny Glynn (Manchester, England) at 31:55.

Although West Virginia held a 15-10 shot advantage after 90 minutes of play, the two teams remained tied at 1-1. Both teams were held scoreless after the first 15 minute overtime before Stigliano provided the heroics for the Friars in the second overtime. Stigliano took a pass from Friar freshman Jonathan Rhode (Guilford, Conn.) and blasted a shot in at 109:07 to give PC its first win under first-year Head Coach Chaka Daley.

Glynn recorded a season-high nine saves for the Friars. WVU goalkeeper Kyle Swarts registered three saves in the loss.

With the win, Providence improved to 1-3 overall and 1-0 in BIG EAST action, while West Virginia dropped to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in league play.

Providence College returns to action on Wednesday, September 13 against Boston College at PC's Glay Field at 4:00 p.m.
