KINGSTON, R.I. -
Red-shirt sophomore Wilder Arboleda (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored 2:37 into overtime to lead the Providence College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the University of Rhode Island Monday night in the championship match of the Ocean State Classic played at the URI Soccer Complex. It marked the second consecutive season that the Friars have captured the tournament of Division I Rhode Island soccer teams. The win also was PC's first at URI since 1997.
Arboleda, who scored the decisive penalty kick that helped the Friars capture the inaugural Ocean State Classic last season, came through again for the Friars in the 93rd minute. Sophomore Brian Grisell (Brookfield, Conn.) fired a low shot from 22 yards out that was aimed at the right corner. URI goalkeeper Peyton Warwick made a diving save to his left, but Arboleda was there for the rebound and fired a low shot into the lower left corner from eight yards out to seal PC's third consecutive win.
The Friars (3-1) held an 8-7 advantage in shots in the first half, including senior Daniel Fabian (Southbury, Conn.) who stole the ball off a URI (1-3) defender 35 yards away from goal, raced in and ripped a shot from 25 yards out that just missed wide left in the fifth minute. Junior Keith Jecewiz (Smithtown, N.Y.) nearly gave PC the lead in the 36th minute, but his shot from 15 yards out missed wide right.
In the second half, two Friar freshmen also had scoring opportunities. Brandon Adler (Montville, N.J.) had a chance from in close after a corner kick but Warwick made the save on his attempt in the 62nd minute. Jimmy Petruccelli (Brentwood, N.H.) maneuvered his way inside the right 18-yard box before firing a shot that missed just high.
The Friars outshot the Rams, 17-9, for the game. Senior goalkeeper Jhojan Obando (Kissimmee, Fla.) made two saves for the Friars to earn his second consecutive shutout, while Warwick stopped 10 shots.
The Friars are back in action on Saturday, September 10 when they host Sacred Heart at 1:00 p.m. at Glay Field.
