PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Freshman Greg Davis (Jamaica, N.Y.) made the most of his collegiate debut as he scored twice, including the game winner with 2:56 remaining in the second half to lead the Providence men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Rhode Island Thursday afternoon at Glay Field. With the win, Providence (1-0) advances to the Championship game of the Ocean State Soccer Classic on Monday, September 6 at Brown's Stevenson Field. The Friars will play the winner of the Bryant/Brown match, while URI (0-1) will play in the consolation match.

With the score tied at 1-1 and overtime looming, junior Daniel Fabian (Southbury, Conn.) controlled the ball down the left flank and fired a left-footed cross to Davis who connected on a diving header from six yards out and buried the ball into the net. It marked PC's first win over Rhode Island since September 9, 2003 when the Friars won by the same score at Glay Field. The victory also marked Providence's sixth consecutive season-opening triumph.

The Rams jumped ahead to a 1-0 lead just 1:17 into the match when they benefited from an own goal. However, the Friars controlled possession for most of the first half and took the match in the 25th minute. After an errant back pass to URI goalkeeper Peyton Warwick, Davis gained possession of the ball, maneuvered his way past Warwick before slotting the ball into the empty net from five yards out.

The Friars finished with a 17-10 shot advantage, including senior Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.) whose right-footed shot from 22 yards out glanced off the cross bar in the 72nd minute. PC goalkeeper Jhojan Obando (Kissimmee, Fla.) finished with four saves, while Warwick stopped four shots.
