Smithfield, R.I. -
The Providence College men's soccer team defeated Bryant, 2-0, in its opening game of the season. Sophomore Mac Steeves (Needham, Mass.) and junior Manny Andrade (Fogo, Cape Verde) scored the Friar goals.
Providence wasted no time in the opening of the game with a series of shots. In the 13th minute, Steeves converted a cross from junior Fabio Machado (Leominster, Mass) to put the Friars in the lead, 1-0. The game remained at 1-0 at the end of the half.
In the 16th minute of the second half, red-shirt goalkeeper Keasel Broome (Claymont, Del.) had a nice save after a Bryant free kick 20 yards out from the goal. Providence then extended its lead to 2-0 in the 38th minute. The second goal came when Bryant's goalkeeper was caught out of the box. Andrade tapped the ball into the net off of another Machado cross.
Overall, the Friars out-shot Bryant 12-10 and held the advantage in shots-on-goal, 6-2.
In the Friar net, Broome registered two saves and earned his eighth career shutout. The Bulldogs goalkeeper, Chris Knaub, finished the afternoon with four saves.
The Friars will take on in-state rival Rhode Island in their first home game on Sunday, Aug. 30. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Ray Treacy Track.
