HAMDEN, Conn. -
The Providence College men's soccer team earned its first victory of the season with a 2-1 triumph at Quinnipiac on Monday, August 29 in Hamden, Conn. Red-shirt sophomore Wilder Arboleda (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored in the 70th minute to break the 1-1 deadlock as the Friars improved to 1-1 while the Bobcats fell to 0-1.
Quinnipiac struck first in the 24th minute when Nils Von Derheide's header found the back of the net. Senior Giuseppe Guerriero (Essex, Mass.) evened the score in the 37th minute as the Friars capitalized on a corner kick. For Guerriero, it marked his first goal of the season as freshman Jimmy Petruccelli (Brentwood, N.H.) assisted on the goal.
The Friars, who finished with a 6-1 edge in corner kicks, benefited from a corner kick in the 70th minute to take the lead for good. Petruccelli played the corner kick, but this time it was Arboleda who was able to get on the end of it and score his first goal of the season. Arboleda also scored the game winner last season when Providence defeated Quinnipiac, 1-0, in Providence.
Senior Jhojan Obando (Kissimmee, Fla.) finished with six saves for Providence, while Borja Angoitia stopped two shots for Quinnipiac.
The Friars are back in action on September 2 at noon when they host Brown in the semifinals of the Ocean State Soccer Classic at PC's Glay Field.
