Dec. 2, 2008

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College Head Lacrosse Coach Chris Burdick announced the Friars' 2009 team captains on Tuesday, December 2. The team will be led by graduate student Colin Reposa (East Falmouth, Mass.), senior Danny Ryan (Chatham, N.J.), junior Garrett Kanter (Marblehead, Mass.), junior Tim Barry (Silver Spring, Md.) and sophomore Steve Lydon (Braintree, Mass.).

"We have been blessed with outstanding leadership in our program over the years and this group should be no different," Coach Burdick said. "This could be the most difficult assignment the group of captains has had in our program in quite some time, with all the new players joining our team this year."

The captains, along with Seniors Robert Bryan (Apex, N.C.), Bobby Labadini (Westford, Mass.) and John Tunney (Medfield, Mass.), have the difficult task of directing a team that has 18 new faces in 2009. The team also will be coping with the loss of a talented senior class and four graduate students from 2008.

Reposa has played 47 career games for the Friars as a midfielder. He scored his first collegiate goal in 2008 and owns 66 groundballs in his career. Ryan also has appeared in 47 games for the Friars and has recorded two career assists to go along with 15 groundballs. Kanter has played 13 games in two seasons for Providence, including 10 games a year ago. He has recorded two points on one goal and one assist, and has picked up seven groundballs. Barry has played in six games for Providence during his career. Lydon, in just his second year with the program, played four games in the midfield for Providence a season ago.

Providence opens the 2009 season against defending NCAA National Champion Syracuse on February 15 in Syracuse, N.Y. The Friars will be competing in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) for the final year, before beginning play in the newly formed BIG EAST Men's Lacrosse League in 2010. The Friars have won four MAAC Regular-Season titles and three MAAC Tournament crowns since joining the league in 1996. The Friars also have earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament during the 2004, 2006 and 2007 seasons.
