Sept. 8, 2008

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College Head Lacrosse Coach Chris Burdick announced on Monday, September 8 that former Friar lacrosse stand-out Bennett Murphy will join the staff as an assistant coach. Murphy replaces Kyle Plumly, who recently resigned his position to pursue other opportunities. He will work closely with the Friars' offensive unit as the offensive coordinator.

Murphy enjoyed a stellar career with the Friars from 2005-2008. In 58 games, he registered 53 goals and 29 assists for 82 points. During his final season in 2008, Murphy enjoyed his finest season on offense with single-season career highs of 23 goals, 14 assists and 37 points. For his efforts, he was named to the All-MAAC Second Team and MAAC All-Tournament Team.

"We are thrilled to have Bennett join the coaching staff after a great career as a player," Burdick said. "Bennett is a leader in every sense of the word and has demonstrated a commitment to the values and ideals we seek to instill in our student-athletes in the lacrosse program at Providence College. He brings a wealth of understanding to our offensive systems, and I have full confidence in allowing him the freedom to run our offensive and man-up units."

Murphy completed his undergraduate degree in finance at Providence College in 2007. He competed for the Friars in 2008 as a graduate student, pursuing a masters in business administration as part of the College's MBA program.
