Men’s Lacrosse Earns BIG EAST Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – It was announced on Wednesday, May 3 that Providence College men’s lacrosse captains senior Jarrod Neumann (Springfield, Mass.) and sophomore Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.) earned major awards from the BIG EAST Conference. Neumann was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, while Boyce was unanimously selected as Goalkeeper of the Year. This marks the first time in program history that two players have earned two major BIG EAST awards in a single season. Head Coach Chris Gabrielli and his assistants also were honored as BIG EAST Staff of the Year.

At the start of the 2017 season, Neumann was named to Faceoff Yearbook Preseason All-American Third Team. He has anchored the Friar defense to a No. 11 ranking in scoring defense among all NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse programs. Neumann has collected 25 ground balls and caused 16 turnovers during the 2017 season. He has recorded three points on two goals and one assist. In addition to being named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and named to the All-BIG EAST First Team, Neumann was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, twice, during the 2017 season (Feb. 27, April 17). He also earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on April 3. Neumann is a three-time All-BIG EAST First-Team selection.

Boyce owns a 9-6 record on the season and has recorded 886:11 minutes in the cage with 154 saves. He ranks sixth in the nation in save percentage (.566) and eighth in goals-against average (7.99). Boyce also was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on April 10 after recording 17 saves and collecting four ground balls in a win against BIG EAST foe Georgetown (13-7) on April 8. Boyce has earned All-BIG EAST First Team honors during each of his two seasons with the program.

Boyce and Neumann’s defensive efforts have helped Providence rank first the BIG EAST in man-down defense (0.13), caused turnovers per game (7.27), goals-against average (8.23) and save percentage (.558). 

Neumann and Boyce also were unanimously named to the All-BIG EAST First Team, sophomore Nick Hatzipetrakos (Syossett, N.Y.) and junior Conner Byrne (Hicksville, N.Y.) were named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. The Friars’ four All-BIG EAST selections mark the most in program history since the league began sponsoring lacrosse in 2010.

Hatizpetrakos leads the Friar attack with 41 points on 22 goals and 19 assists. He has recorded three hat tricks on the season and has recorded five multi-goal games during the 2017 season. Byrne has recorded 12 points on eight goals and four assists. He has registered 34 goals and caused 11 turnovers.

The Providence coaching staff also was named the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year. Head Coach Chris Gabrielli has made program history with back-to-back BIG EAST Tournament berths in the 2016 and 2017 seasons. He also led the program to its first national ranking this season (20th on April 17) in both the USILA/Nike Coaches Poll and the Inside Lacrosse/Maverick Media Poll. Providence posted a 3-2 record in BIG EAST play during the 2017 season, marking the first time the Friars had won three BIG EAST games since the league began sponsoring lacrosse. The team also recorded its first winning season since 2006.

The Friars will compete in the 2017 BIG EAST Tournament presented by Jeep hosted in Providence, R.I. in the semifinal game against No. 15/15 Villanova at 7:00 p.m. on May 4. The game will be broadcast by CBS Sports Network.
