EDISON, N.J. - Senior midfielder Kyle Ojakian (Cheshire, Conn.) has been named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, for the week ending April 28, 2002. The announcement was made by the MAAC office on Monday, April 29. It is the second time this season that he has earned Offensive Player of the Week honors. Last year (2001), Ojakian became the first Providence College men's lacrosse player to be named to the All-MAAC First Team.

Last week, Ojakian led the Friars to a 1-1 record and assured PC it's highest finish ever in the MAAC standings (second). On April 24, Ojakian scored two goals in a, 13-7, non-conference loss to Brown in Providence, R.I. On April 27, Ojakian led the Friars with two goals an four assists in a, 10-5, MAAC victory over Mount St. Mary's in Providence, R.I. The win secured second place in the upcoming MAAC Championship Tournament held in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., on May 3-4. Ojakian also set PC's single-season assist record (41 assists) and single-season scoring record (62 points). Ojakian held the previous single-season assist record (39), which he set in 2001. Matt Pymm ('99) held the previous single-season scoring record (58 points), which he set in 1998.

PC finished the regular-season schedule with a 9-6 overall record and a 5-2 mark in the MAAC, and will finish the 2002 season with a winning record for the first time since 1988. Providence enters the MAAC Championship as the No. 2 seed, and will face No. 3 Mount St. Mary's at 3:00 p.m. on May 3. Manhattan College earned the top spot in the tournment and will face No. 4 St. Joseph's. The winner of each game will advance to the tournament finals, and earn the chance to play for the league's automatic bid to the 2002 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship. The Friars will finish the 2002 season with a winning record for the first time since 1988.
