Lacrosse Endowment Fund Established In Memory Of Kevin Murray

April 19, 2018

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Through a lead gift by Sean ‘91 and Deb Horrigan, Providence College has established the Kevin “Muggs” Murray Lacrosse Endowment Fund in memory of the former head coach who passed away earlier this year.

Murray began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Providence in 1986, under the direction of then-Head Coach Steve O’Donnell. Murray took over the reins of the program in 1987 and remained the Friars’ head coach for nine seasons (1987-95).

“Muggs”, as he was affectionately referred to by his players, is credited with using lacrosse to teach life lessons that his alumni carry with them to this day.

“Coach Murray took a chance on me and my twin brother, John - two kids from Cleveland, Ohio," Horrigan said. "That decision has had such an enormous impact on my life. I have been 27 years removed from PC; however, I remember almost every one of our practices and games. “Muggs” truly made my time at PC extremely enjoyable."

The Murray Lacrosse Endowment Fund will cement Murray’s legacy by providing annual support to the lacrosse program in perpetuity.

“This fund will enhance the experience of every future Friar lacrosse student-athlete," Athletics Director Bob Driscoll said. "I want to thank the Horrigan family for leading this initiative to honor Coach Murray. His legacy of bettering the lives of our student-athletes will live on forever."

“The outpouring of support for Coach Murray is a testament to the strength of our Friar lacrosse family," current Head Coach Chris Gabrielli said. "He clearly was a role model to so many of our alumni and I am proud to see his legacy continued through this fund."

Donations can be made to the Kevin “Muggs” Murray Lacrosse Endowment Fund by contacting Kevin Connolly at or 401-865-1090.

Donors who contribute a minimum of $5,000 to the fund (payable over 5-years) will receive annual reports detailing the market and book values as well as the distribution amount. It truly is an investment in the program.
