PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team is set to host No. 5 Notre Dame. The Friars enter Sunday's match-up with an overall record of 7-4 (1-2 BIG EAST). The Friars have posted seven wins thus far which marks the most wins in a single season for Providence since its 2008 campaign.
Providence last competed on Tuesday, April 2 when the Friars travelled to New Haven, Conn. to take on Yale. The Bulldogs topped the Friars, 13-6. After a back-and-forth first quarter, Yale carried a 8-5 lead into halftime. The Bulldogs went on to out-score the Friars, 5-1 in the final 30 minutes of play.
Providence has been aggressive on offense, out-shooting its opponents, 429-376, and out-scoring its opponents, 121-120. Junior Sean Wright (Silver Spring, Md.) tops the Friar scoresheet with 39 points on a team-high 30 goals and nine assists. Junior Andrew Barton (Timonium, Md.) ranks second on the team in scoring with 37 points on 21 goals and 16 assists.
Junior Ryan Shaw (East Hampton, N.Y.) has taken the most face-offs for Providence and has won 122-252 face-off attempts.
As a team the Friars are clearing the ball at 89.2 percent and have been successful on 181-203 attempts.
Freshman goalie Jack Connelly (Kenilworth, Ill.) has started all 11 games for the Friars and has logged 643:44 minutes in goal. Connelly has recorded 116 saves for Providence and holds a .498 save percentage.
Providence is 0-3 all-time with Notre Dame since joining the BIG EAST Conference in 2010. The two team's last met on April 27, 2012 in South Bend, Ind. where the Fighting Irish defeated the Friars, 9-1.
Scouting Notre Dame... Notre Dame enters Sunday's game with an overall record of 7-2 (1-1 BIG EAST). The Fighting Irish's conference win came over Rutgers on Sunday, March 24 when Notre Dame topped the Scarlet Knights, 7-6. Matt Kavanagh leads Notre Dame in the scoring column with 28 points on 18 goals and 10 assists. Jim Marlatt and Sean Rogers join Kavanagh in the 20+ point category with 21 points apiece. Liam O'Connor has had the most presence for Notre Dame at the face-off "X." O'Connor is 80-of-150 in face-off attempts. John Kemp has logged 539:15 minutes in goal for Notre Dame and owns a .537 save percentage. Kemp has recorded 79 saves and holds a 7.57 goals against average. Notre Dame has out-shot its opponents, 350-265, and out-scored its opponents, 95-70.
