PROVIDENCE, R.I. - PROVIDENCE, R.I - The Providence College men's lacrosse program is set to host St. John's in its BIG EAST home opener at 6:03 p.m. on Saturday, March 29 at the Ray Treacy Track Complex located in Providence, R.I. The game will be nationally televised on FOX Sports 1. The first 200 students to the game will receive a free Friar lacrosse tank top.
Friars Enter Saturday... Providence enters Saturday's match-up with an overall record of 3-6 including a 0-1 mark in BIG EAST play. The Friars have posted wins over Vermont (8-6), Boston University (10-7) and Fairfield (14-11). Providence's lone conference game was a 12-6 decision in favor of BIG EAST foe Rutgers (3/15).
Last Week... Last Week the Friars battled back from a three goal deficit, 8-5, to send their evening match-up with Brown to overtime (3/22). The 11-11 contest was settled in double overtime on a Bear goal to give Brown the victory. Senior Andrew Barton (Timonium, Md.) tallied a season-high, and a single-game high, seven points on seven goals and two assists. Senior goalie Tyler Himes (Spring City, Pa.) posted a career-high 16 saves in the Friars' effort. Senior face-off specialist Ryan Shaw(East Hampton, N.Y.) finished the game 16-of-26 at the "X" with 13 ground balls.
Scouting St. John's... The Red Storm enters Saturday's match-up with an overall record of 5-3 including a 1-0 mark in BIG EAST play. St. John's has posted wins over Holy Cross (15-13), Siena (14-9), Georgetown (15-7), Hofstra (11-10), and Stony Brook (13-11). The Red Storm has dropped decisions to Yale (10-6), Drexel (16-11), and Syracuse (14-8). Currently the Red Storm is on a second-best league three-game winning streak (Denver is currently on a four-game winning streak). St. John's is led on the offensive end by Kieran McArdle who has tallied a team-high 46 points on 25 goals and 21 assists. McArdle leads the league in goals per game, assists per game and points per game. Four additional players have tallied double digits in the scoring column for the Red Storm. Colin Keegan ranks second on the team in scoring with 24 points on 19 goals and five assists. Kevin Cernuto ranks third with 23 points on 17 goals and six assists. Ryan Fitzgerald and Stefan Diachenko round out the scoring leaders with 18 and 11 points, respectively. Mario Carrera serves as St. John's face-off specialist. Carrera has won 81-of-182 attempts at the "X." Joseph Danaher has played 443:15 minutes in goal for the Red Storm and has posted 83 saves for a .503 saves percentage. In addition, Danaher ranks second in the league in saves per game.
All-Time Series... The Friars trail St. John's in the all-time series, 13-0. Providence and St. John's last met on April 20, 2013 in Providence, R.I. where the Friars fell to the Red Storm, 16-13. Senior Sean Wright (Silver Spring, Md.) paced the Friars with a five point performance on four goals and one assist. Senior Andrew Barton (Timonium, Md.) and junior Greg FitzMaurice (Huntington, N.Y.) also found the back of the cage for the Friars in the afternoon match-up. Senior Ryan Shaw(East Hampton, N.Y.) dominated the face-off game, winning 20-of-33 attempts.
Five Friars With Double Digit Points... Five Friars have tallied double digits in the scoring column. Senior Andrew Barton (Timonium, Md.) leads Providence with 30 points on 18 goals and 12 assists. Senior Sean Wright (Silver Spring, Md.) ranks second in scoring with 28 points on 16 goals and 12 assists. Freshman Alex Corboy (College Park, Md.) ranks third on the team in scoring with 19 points on 17 goals and two assists. Freshman Joseph Fitzpatrick (Rockville, Md.) and junior Greg FitzMaurice(Huntington, N.Y.) round out the top scorers with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Barton Tallies Season-High Seven Points At Brown... Senior attack Andrew Barton(Timonium, Md.) notched seven points in a 12-11 double overtime loss to cross-town rival Brown on Saturday, March 22. Barton rifled a season-best five shots past Brown's goalie and dished out two assists. His five goals marked his fifth multi-goal game of the season.
Barton And Wright Assist Friars... Seniors Andrew Barton (Timonium, Md.) and Sean Wright(Silver Spring, Md.) lead the Friars in assists with 12 apiece. Barton has recorded four multi-assist games thus far this season while Wright has posted three multi-assist contests.
Barton Breaks 30-Point Plateau... Senior Andrew Barton(Timonium, Md.) has tallied 30 points through nine games for the Friars. Barton tops the Providence score sheet with a team-high 18 goals and 12 assists. Barton tallied a season-high five goals in the Friars' match-up with Brown on March 22. In addition, Barton is averaging 3.33 points per game (2.00 goals and 1.33 assists).
Fresh Friars... Providence has 20 freshmen out of a roster of 47 Friars. Twelve of the 20 freshman have seen action in games thus far on the season, with Jarrod Neumann (Springfield, Mass.) starting each of the Friars' nine games. Four freshmen have found their way on the scorecard. Alex Corboy (College Park, Md.) leads the class in scoring with 19 points on 17 goals and two assists. Joseph Fitzpatrick (Rockville, Md.) ranks second with 13 points on 10 goals and three assists. In addition, Austin Goltz (Orchard Park, N.Y.) has tallied three points while Trup Ortlieb (Drexel Hill, Pa.) and Jimmy Cunningham(Syracuse, N.Y.) have tallied one point each. Neumann serves as a major part of the defensive core and has caused a team-high 16 turnovers in addition to collecting 20 ground balls.
Corboy Leads Freshmen in Scoring...Freshman Alex Corboy(College Park, Md.) leads all freshman in scoring with 19 points on a team-high 17 goals and two assists.
Shaw At The Face-Off... Senior face-off specialist Ryan Shaw(East Hampton, N.Y.) owns a .436 win percentage at the "X." Shaw has successfully won 58-of-133 attempts. Shaw leads the Friars in ground balls with 32.
Wright Joins Barton In 100-Point Club... Wright tallied his 100th point on a finish in the first quarter against Quinnipiac on March 1. To date Wright has tallied 121 career points on 80 goals and 41 assists. Barton currently has 130 career points on 62 goals and 58 assists. Barton and Wright currently rank 10th and 11th, respectively, on the PC all-time scorers list.
Hat Tricks Across The Board... Three Friars have tallied hat tricks for Providence thus far on the season. Freshman Alex Corboy (College Park, Md.) leads Providence with five hat tricks, followed by seniors Andrew Barton (Timonium, Md.) and Sean Wright(Silver Spring, Md.) with three and two hat tricks, respectively.
Scoring Streaks... Seniors Sean Wright (Silver Spring, Md.) and Andrew Barton(Timonium, Md.) have scoring streaks dating back to their sophomore campaigns (2012). Barton is on a 29 game point streak dating back to April 14, 2012. Wright has a 28 game streak going that dates back to April 17, 2012.
Himes Between The Pipes... Senior goalie Tyler Himes(Spring City, Pa.) has started each of the Friars' nine games between the pipes. In 467:46 minutes of action, Himes has posted 91 saves and owns a .523 saves percentage. Himes recorded a career-high 16 saves against Brown on Saturday, March 22.
Up Next For The Friars... Providence returns to action on Tuesday, April 1, when the Friars play host to the Yale Bulldogs in Providence, R.I. The 7:00 p.m. night game will be broadcast on WOON 1240 AM.
