Men's Lacrosse To Host UMass Lowell

The Providence College men's lacrosse team (4-3) will host UMass Lowell (2-6) on March 22 for a 4:00 p.m. matchup on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I.

Scouting The River Hawks
Entering Tuesday's game, the River Hawks are coming off of a loss against Hartford (9-8). Sam Klingsporn leads UMass Lowell in goals with 14, while Sean Tyrell leads the team in points (22) with 13 goals and nine assists. Grant Lardieri has started all eight games for the River Hawks, totaling 72 saves with a 10.42 goals-against average and a .471 save percentage.

Last Time Out
Providence upset No. 12 Hofstra, 12-7, on Mar. 19 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. Freshman Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y.) tallied six points in the game with three goals and three assists. Hofstra took the lead early in the game but the Friars retaliated with five unanswered goals and never looked back. In net for Providence was freshman Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.). Boyce collected 11 saves.

Scouting the Friars
So far this season, Mazzone leads the team in goals (16), assists (nine) and points (25). Freshman Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y.) sits second in goals (13) and points (19). Tate Boyce has started in all seven games for Providence, collecting 90 saves. Boyce enters the weekend with a 9.29 goals-against average and a .581 save percentage. Boyce also ranks seventh in NCAA Division I in saves per game (12.86) and sixth in save percentage (.581).

The Friars were picked to finish fifth in the BIG EAST Preseason poll after finishing with an 5-9 (1-4 BIG EAST) record during the 2015 season. Four of the top six scorers from last season return to the field in 2016, including Will Mazzone, Michael Perettine, Joshua Keller and Keenan Assaraf. Mazzone was last years' leader in goals (24) and points (35) and also tied for the lead in assists with 11, while Perettine tied for second on the team in goals, with 16.  

Additionally, Jarrod Neumann returns for the Friars on defense and was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team on Jan. 25, the NEILA Preseason All-New England First Team on Feb. 8 and was also named a Preseason All-America Honorable Mention selection in December by Inside Lacrosse.

Will Mazzone Named BIG EAST Offensive Player Of The Week
Mazzone registered six goals and two assists for eight points in the Friars' victory over Holy Cross on Feb. 12 to earn BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Feb. 15. The feat marked a single-game career high in goals and points. Additionally, in Providence's season opener at Boston University on Feb. 6, Mazzone tallied two goals and assist to bring his season total to eight goals and three assists, through two games. 

Sophomore James Barclay (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) also was recognized for his defensive efforts against Holy Cross. Barclay was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after holding the Crusaders' top offensive player to just one assist in the game. He also has collected five ground balls and caused three turnovers so far this season. 

Mazzone Hits 100 Career Points
Prior to the Holy Cross game on Feb. 12, Mazzone had a total of 98 career points. With his second of six goals in that game, he hit the 100 career points mark and then surpassed it during the game. After the March 19 game against Hofstra, Mazzone collected an additional four points to add his collegiate career total (113).

Next Game
After taking on the River Hawks, the Friars will host Bellarmine for a 1:00 p.m. game on March 26 in Providence, R.I.
