PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team will face-off against No. 14/15 UMass on Tuesday, March 11, when the Friars travel to Amherst, Mass. for a 3:00 p.m. start time. The Friars enter Tuesday's match-up with an overall record of 3-2.
Headed into Tuesday, UMass leads the all-time series between the two men's lacrosse programs, 7-0. The Friars and Minutemen last met on March 15, 2011 where the Providence fell to UMass, 14-6.
This season Providence has posted wins over Vermont (8-6), Boston University (10-7) and Fairfield (14-11). The Friars have dropped decisions to Quinnipiac (16-9) and Sacred Heart (11-10).
As a unit, the Friars have out shot their opponents 192-168. In addition, Providence has capitalized on 11-of-19 man-up opportunities. Senior attack Sean Wright (Silver Spring, Md.) leads Providence with 17 points on 10 goals and seven assists. Senior midfielder Andrew Barton (Timonium, Md.) and freshman attack Alex Corboy (College Park, Md.) join Wright with double digits in the scoring column with 16 points apiece. Barton has tallied eight goals and eight assists while Corboy has netted a team-best 14 goals and dished out two assists.
Providence has shown strength in their clearing game and has successfully cleared the ball in 91-of-102 attempts.
Freshman Jarrod Neumann (Springfield, Mass.) leads the defensive core with 10 caused turnovers and 12 ground balls. Classmate Jimmy Cunningham (West Genesee, N.Y.) has caused six turnovers and collected a team-high 13 ground balls.
Senior face-off specialist Ryan Shaw (East Hampton, N.Y.) has collected a .443 win percentage at the draw, winning 27-of-61 attempts thus far on the season. In addition Shaw has picked up 12 ground balls.
Senior goalie Tyler Himes (Spring City, Pa.) has started each of the Friars' five games and has recorded 44 saves in 268:38 minutes of action.
SCOUTING UMASS: UMass enters Tuesday afternoon's match-up with an overall record of 4-1. The Minutemen have recorded wins over Army (6-5), Ohio State (12-11), Harvard (8-4) and Brown (15-2). UMass' lone loss came against Albany (25-10). Nick Mariano leads the Minutemen with 17 points on 15 goals and two assists. Behind Mariano, Matt Whippen and Connor Mooney have tallied nine points apiece. Joe Calvello owns a .611 win percentage at the face-off "X" and has won 66-of-108 attempts. In addition Calvello has collected 44 ground balls. Zach Oliveri has started each of the Minutemen's five games in goal and owns a .536 save percentage and 9.47 goals against average.
