PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team is set to host Sacred Heart at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 9 at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. Providence enters Saturday's game with an overall record of 3-0 (0-0 BIG EAST).
The Friars have opened the 2013 season with three straight victories. Providence has recorded wins over Wagner (17-6), Vermont (13-5) and Manhattan (12-9). The last time that Providence won its first three games of its season was in 2000 with consecutive wins over Holy Cross (10-9), Wagner (19-2) and Sacred Heart (10-9).
Junior attack Sean Wright (Silver Spring, Md.) leads the Friars in scoring with 13 points on nine goals and four assists. Wright has tallied a hat-trick in each of Providence's victories. Behind Wright is junior midfielder Andrew Barton (Timonium, Md.) with 12 points on six goals and six assists. Senior attack JT Weber (West Hartford, Conn.) closes out the top three Friars in scoring with 11 points on eight goals and three assists.
Junior Ryan Shaw (East Hampton, N.Y.) has won 40-of-62 face-off attempts and owns a 64.5 percent win percentage. In addition, Shaw has collected a team high 25 ground balls.
Freshman goalie Jack Connelly (Kenilworth, Ill.) has started all three games for Providence and has recorded 38 saves on the season. Connelly owns a .667 save percentage.
SCOUTING SACRED HEART: The Pioneers have started their 2013 campaign with a record of 0-4 over the course of their first four games. Sacred Heart has been defeated by Hofstra (14-9), Marist (15-2), Holy Cross (11-9) and Yale (14-6). Sacred Heart is led by senior Matt King and junior Mike Mawdsley who have tallied eight points apiece for the Pioneers. King has notched five goals and dished out three assists while Mawdsley has tallied a team high eight goals. Senior Stephen Kontos has dominated the face-off "X" for the Pioneers, winning 62-of-100 attempts. Sophomore Jon Flood has spent 153:23 minutes between the pipes for Sacred Heart and has tallied 35 saves.
