SERIES BREAKDOWN - PROVIDENCE VS. ST. JOSEPH’S... The Friars and Hawks have met 15 times since 1997. Providence currently holds the edge over St. Joseph’s with a 9-6 all-time record.
Saturday’s meeting will be the first since 2009 where the Friars won a 5-4 decision.
THREE TELEVISED REGULAR SEASON GAMES IN 2018... The Friars will be featured on television on three occassions during the season. Yurview (Ch. 4 & 1004) will broadcast the Friars’ contest against Bryant University on Feb. 17. The BIG EAST Digital Network will broadcast the Friars’ game at Marquette on April 14 on Fox Sports Go. CBS Sports Network will feature Providence in its final regular season home contest against Denver on April 21.
INSIDE LACROSSE POLL... As of Feb. 19, the Friars are receiving votes in the Inside Lacrosse Maverick Media Poll.
PROVIDENCE COLLEGE FRIARS ENTER 2018 NON-CONFERENCE SEASON... The Friars are looking to return to action in 2018 ready to build on the successes of the 2017 season. The team returns 39 players and has added 11 new faces to the program.
FRIARS FALL IN SEASON OPENER... In their first contest of 2018, the Friars fell to No. 20 Boston University (12-11) in overtime. This marked the second-consecutive season that the Friars have lost to the Terriers in overtime.
FRIARS ON TOP IN OCEAN STATE CLASH... The Friars defeated Bryant, 13-8, on Saturday, Feb. 17. The Friars improved to 2-1 on the season, while Bryant dropped to 1-2 on the year.
Providence put together two big scoring runs in the game, including six-straight goals beginning with six-seconds left in the first and ending at the 13:16 mark of the third quarter. Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.) finished the game with 13 saves for Providence. Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y.) led the team in ground balls (four), while adding two goals and one assist. Nick Hatzipetrakos (Syossett, N.Y.) and Sean Leahey (Cranford, N.J.) each recorded a hat trick. Leahey also added one assist for a team-high four points.
FRIARS PICKED TO FINISH THIRD IN BIG EAST POLL... Providence was picked to finish third in the 2018 BIG EAST Preseason Coaches’ Poll with a total of 16 points. Denver was picked to win the league, having collected five first-place votes and 25 points overall. Villanova was picked to finish second, with one first-place vote and 21 points.
THREE FRIARS EARN PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST SPOTS... It was announced by the league on Wednesday, Jan. 24 that Providence College men’s lacrosse players James Barclay (Toronto, Ontario), Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.) and Conner Byrne (Hicksville, N.Y.) were named to the 2018 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Boyce and Barclay were each honored as unanimous selections.
FIVE FRIARS NAMED TO NEILA PRESEASON TEAMS... Five members of the Providence College lacrosse program were selected to the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Division 1 Preseason Teams. Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.) and James Barclay (Toronto, Ontario) were First Team selections. Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y.), Sean Leahey (Cranford, N.J.) and Conner Byrne (Hicksville, N.Y.) were named to the Second Team.
FRIARS MAKE PROGRAM HISTORY IN 2017... The Friars embark on the 2018 season after a historic 2017 season. The Friars competed in the BIG EAST Championship game for the first time in program history, falling just short of the title in a 10-9 loss to Marquette on May 6, 2017. PC also achieved it’s first-ever national ranking (as high as 20).
10 IS THE NUMBER TO BEAT... The Friars posted a 10-7 record and a 3-2 mark in BIG EAST play and finished third in the BIG EAST Conference final standings. The Friars 10 victories are tied for the most wins in program history for a single season, and are the most wins since 2006.
SCORING DEFENSE RANKED NATIONALLY IN 2017... Providence concluded the 2017 season ranked No. 9 in scoring defense (8.35) among all Division I men’s lacrosse programs.
BOYCE RETURNS TO NET... In 2018, Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.) posts a 8.51 goals-against average and .527 save percentage. In the Friars season-opener against Boston University on Feb. 3, Boyce registered 12 saves. Against Holy Cross on Feb. 10, he posted 11 saves. Against Bryant on Feb. 17, he posted 13 saves.
In 2017, Boyce ranked sixth in the nation goal-against average (8.05) and save-percentage (.569) among all Division I men’s lacrosse goaltenders.
In 2017, Boyce was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year. He was also a unaninimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team and earned USILA All-America honoros (Third Team) and Inside Lacrosse All-America Honorable Mention recognition.
FRIARS FOR FIVE... Sean Leahey (Cranford, N.J.) opened the 2018 season with five goals against Boston University on Feb. 2. During his freshman debut, Leahey finished fifth on the team in the points category with 17 on 16 goals and one assist.
Nick Hatzipetrakos (Syossett, N.Y.) led the Friars to a 9-6 victory over Holy Cross on Saturday, Feb. 10 with five goals. The junior scored four in the second half to push the Friars to an early 7-4 lead in the third quarter.
McGREEN SNIPES TWO AGAINST BRYANT... Freshman Evan McGreen (Narragansett, R.I.) registered his first collegiate tally in the Friars’ 13-8 victory over Bryant on Feb. 17. McGreen finished the game with two goals and one assist.
MASESSA SHINES EARLY... Freshman Zach Masessa (Montgomery, N.J.) registered his first collegiate tally in a Providence win over Holy Cross on Feb. 10 (9-6). Masessa has appeared in two games for the Friars this season as a rookie and has recorded one goal and collected two groundballs.
FRIARS EARN BIG EAST WEEKLY HONORS...
(Feb. 19) Junior goaltender Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Boyce finished with 12 saves in the Friars’ victory over Bryant (13-8) on Feb. 17. In goal, Boyce posts a 2-1 record in 2018. He owns an 8.51 goals-against average and a .527 save percentage on the season.
(Feb. 12) Zach Masessa (Montgomery, N.J.) was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. Masessa registered his first collegiate tally against Holy Cross in the Friars’ 9-6 victory on Saturday, Feb. 10. Masessa, made his collegiate debut Boston University on Feb. 3 and collected two groundballs.
Nick Hatzipetrakos (Syossett, N.Y.) and James Barclay (Toronto, Ontario) were named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll. Hatzipetrakos registered six goals over two games, including five goals against the Crusaders on Feb. 10. Barclay has played an integral role on the Friars’ defensive line and has posted one assist, six groundballs and caused three turnovers in two games for the Friars.
KEARNS HOT ON THE ATTACK... With 45 points during the 2017 season on 32 goals and 13 assists, Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y.) led the Friar attack heading into the 2018 season.
Through three games in 2018, he has tallied six points on three goals and three assists.
FRIARS LOOK TO WIN THE ‘X’... This season, Alex George (Simbury, Conn.) and RJ Romeo (Wilton, Conn.) have seen action from the face-off “X”. George posts a .500 winning percentage (17-34) and Romeo posts a .636 winning percentage (7-11) at the face-off “X”.
ROOKIES... The Friars welcomed 11 new members to the men’s lacrosse program in the fall of 2017. Newcomer’s include Alex Borg (Tenafly, N.J.), Toby Burgdorf (Westfield, N.J.), Dinio Cijuste (Maplewood, N.J.), Taylor Dankenbring (Agoura Hills, Calif.), Emmett Jennings (Fair Haven, N.J.), Matt Leader (Pound Ridge, N.Y.), Owen Martinson (Milton, Mass.), Zach Masessa (Montogomery, N.J.), Evan McGreen (Narragansett, R.I.), Dylan O’Donnell (Coventry, R.I.), and Ryan Poole (Huntington, N.Y.).
SCOUTING ST. JOSEPH’S... The Hawks enter the weekend with a 0-1 mark in 2018. St. Joseph’s dropped its first game of the season on Feb. 17 against Fairfield (11-6).
PLAYERS TO WATCH... Kyle Cain leads the Hawks with three points on two goals and one assist against Fairfield. Mike Rastivo, Jason Kelly and Chris Blewitt trail with two points each.
Goaltender Mike Adler owns a 11.0 goal-against average and a .476 save percentage.
WHAT’S NEXT... The Friars will hit the road to take on Sacred Heart on Saturday, March 1 in Fairfield, Conn. for a 1:00 p.m. start.
