PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse program opens its 2014 slate on Saturday, Feb. 22 when the Friars travel to Burlington, Vt. for a 1:00 p.m. match-up with Vermont. The afternoon contest will be played at Virtue Field.
Providence enters Saturday's game with a 5-13 record in the all-time series with Vermont. The Friars and Catamounts last met on Feb. 23, 2013 where Providence topped Vermont, 13-5.
Head Coach Chris Gabrielli enters his second season with the Friars. Assistants Brett Holm and John Galloway along with Volunteer Coach Justin Turri look to build upon the Friars' 8-8 (1-5 BIG EAST) 2013 campaign.
Providence returns 27 Friars and welcomes 20 freshmen. The 2014 roster is comprised of 13 seniors, eight juniors and six sophomores.
Senior captains Andrew Barton (Timonium, Md.) and Sean Wright (Silver Spring, Md.) return to the line-up after leading the Friars' offensive force last season with a combined 98 points on 68 goals and 30 assists. Wright led the Friars with 53 points on a team-high 41 goals and 12 assists. Barton tallied 45 points on 27 goals and a team-best 18 assists. Fellow captain, junior, Greg FitzMaurice (Huntington, N.Y.) and sophomore Kevin Blair (Hingham, Mass.) finished last year with 22 points apiece while senior Robby Stack(Medfield, Mass.) added 11 points.
The Friar defense returns seniors Zach Rogers (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) and Ryan Martin (Ontario, N.Y.) in addition to sophomore Griffin Goudreau (Campbell, Calif.).
Vermont will be broadcasting free live video of the game and will be offering free live stats.
SCOUTING VERMONT: Vermont enters Saturday's match-up with an overall record of 0-1. The Catamounts dropped their season opener at Colgate, 13-3, on Sat. Feb 15. Three different Catamounts found the back of the cage in the loss. Blake Pendleton, Nick Bartlett and John Everett buried shots to record their first points of the season. Vermont returns 26 players and welcomes 10 freshmen, including three Catamounts who tallied double digits in the scoring column last season. Senior Graham Horvath finished the 2013 season as the second leading scorer with 34 points on 31 goals and three assists. Junior Tim Yager and sophomore Patrick Clark each tallied 14 points for the Catamounts last season. Vermont returns it's starting goalie, sophomore Justin Rosenberg, who started 12 games for the Catamounts last season. Rosenberg played 670:59 minutes in between the pipes and posted 11.89 goals against average.
