Men's Lacrosse Mourns Loss Of Former Head Coach Kevin Murray

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men’s lacrosse program mourns the loss of former Head Coach Kevin Murray. Murray, who guided the Friars lacrosse program for a nine seasons, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 3.

Murray began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Providence in 1986, under the direction of then-Head Coach Steve O’Donnell. Murray took over the reins of the program in 1987 and remained the Friars’ head coach for nine seasons (1987-95).

“On behalf of the current team and alumni associated with our program, our thoughts and prayers go out to Coach Kevin Murray and his family,” Providence College Head Coach Chris Gabrielli said. “Coach Murray dedicated his life to the growth and advancement of lacrosse in Rhode Island, at all levels, including Providence College. He will be sorely missed by his former players.”

Murray most recently served as Head Coach at Bishop Hendricken, where he led the lacrosse program to five Rhode Island State Championships (2002, 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2011).

Visiting hours will be held at Perry McStay Funeral Home in East Providence on Wednesday, Feb. 7 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Mass will be held on Thursday, Feb. 8 at St. Margaret’s Church in Rumford, R.I. at 10:00 a.m.

The Providence College men’s lacrosse program will offer a moment of silence for Coach Murray prior to its home opener against Holy Cross on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. The game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
