Men's Lacrosse Beats Siena 13-2; Providence Advances To First-Ever Postseason Appearance In MAAC Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team rewrote the history books with a 13-2 win over Siena College on Tuesday, May 1. The victory earns Providence its first-ever post-season appearance in men's lacrosse, as it clinched the fourth and final play-off spot in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Confernce (MAAC) Championships. The team will face top-seed Quinnipiac College in the opening game of the four-team single elimination tournament on Saturday, May 5 at 12:00 p.m. The championships are going to be held at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Third-seed Sacred Heart will play second-seed Mount St. Mary's at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. The two winners will advance to the championship game at 1:00 p.m. on the following day (Sunday, May 6). Junior transfer Kyle Ojakian (Cheshire, Conn.) became PC's all-time single-season assist leader with 39, as he tallied three assists on the day. The previous record of 38, was set in 1988 by Jack Crowley. Ojakian's record-setting assist came on the final Friar goal of the day, with 2:33 remaining in the game to earn the 13-2 victory. Providence set another team record, by earning a perfect 6-0 home record. The 1985 Friars, who finished the season 10-2 overall, posted a 5-0 mark at home. The 1987 and 1988 teams earned 5-1 records at home.
In the game, freshman Kevin Kornobis (Merrick, N.Y.) tallied a career-high five points on four goals and one assist to lead the Friar attack. Tom McLoughlin (Yorktown, N.Y.) and David Kole (Montclair, N.J.) scored two goals apiece, while Jim Dooley (Maplewood, N.J.), Cameron Roller (Sudbury, Mass.), Skip Dunphy (Manhasset, N.Y.), C.P. Kenny and Ryan Russell (Montvale, N.J.) scored one goal each. Ojakian led the team with three assists, followed by two from Jon Meehan (Peabody, Mass.), and one each from Kornobis, McLoughlin, Dooley and Roller.
Daniel Wolpert led the Saints with one goal and one assist in the final game of the season for Siena. Marc Vaccaro added second goal. John Farley (West Simsbury, N.Y.) earned the win in goal, and registered 11 saves in 45 minutes of action. Farley allowed just one goal. He was relieved at the beginning of the fourth quarter by Paul Doran (Amityville, N.Y.). Doran gave up one goal, and finished the game with no saves. Siena goaltender Alex Berberian played all 60 minutes. The senior made 11 saves in his final collegiate game. Providence improves to 7-8 overall and 5-4 in the MAAC. The Saints fall to 1-13 overall and 1-8 in the MAAC.
