Friars Fall to Marquette in Overtime

MILWAUKEE, WIS. – The Providence men’s lacrosse team fell to Marquette in overtime on Saturday afternoon, 12-11, at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis.

1st Quarter: Both defenses came out strong in the opening period combining to allow just six total shots on goal. The Friars broke through first with Sean Leahey (Cranford, N.J.) scoring midway through the first to put Providence on top, 1-0. With just under 30 seconds left in the frame the Friars doubled their lead as Ryan Nawrocki (Smithtown, N.Y.) scored off a feed from Evan McGreen (Narragansett, R.I.) on the man-up. Goalie Tate Boyce (Mathews, N.C.) saved both shots fired his direction to keep Providence up 2-0 after one.

2nd Quarter: Marquette got on the board early in the second quarter courtesy of Connor McClelland. Providence came right back with Nawrocki scoring a pair to complete the first half hat-trick around McGreen’s second goal of the day to jump increase the Friars lead to 4-1. The Golden Eagles answered as John Wagner scored on the man-up, but Joseph McHale (Bernardsville, N.J.) netted his second goal of the season to give the Friars a 6-2 lead going into the half.

3rd Quarter: The Golden Eagles’ offense found a rhythm in the third quarter. Luke Anderson, Connor McCelland, and Anthony Orsini scored within the first nine minutes of the half for Marquette. Nick Hatzipetrakos (Syosset, N.Y.) kept Providence up by a pair heading into the final stanza as he scored his 19th goal of the season with seven minutes left in the period.

4th Quarter: In the early stages of the fourth quarter Marquette maintained the pressure with Peter Henkhaus scoring his first goal of the day to pull the Golden Eagles to within just one. As they did all day long, Providence responded. Three straight goals from Leahey, Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y.), and Nawrocki in the span of just over two minutes increased the Friars lead up to 10-6 with 7:57 left. The Friars maintained an 11-7 lead with 1:40 left but were unable to put Marquette away. The Golden Eagles scored four goals over the final 1:37 capped off by Griffin Fleminger’s buzzer beater to send the game to overtime.

Overtime:  Marquette won the opening faceoff and instantly called a timeout. Out of the break, John Wagner scored his 25th goal of the season to give the Golden Eagles the come-from-behind victory.

Game Notes: The loss is Providence’s fourth overtime defeat this season. The Friars’ 11 goals are the third time they’ve scored in double figures over their last four games.  Nawrocki scored four goals to up his season total to 14 while Nick Hatzipetrakos’ goal in the third quarter kept him atop the Friars’ leaderboard with 19 on the year. McGreen finished the game with one goal and four assists.

What’s Next: The Friars wrap up their three game road trip as they travel to Brown University on Tuesday, April 17th to take on the Bears with face-off scheduled for 7:00 pm.
