Men's Lacrosse Upset In Overtime At Canisius, 9-8

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team was defeated by Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent Canisius, 9-8, in overtime on Saturday afternoon.

Providence was led offensively by freshman Frank Bosco (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) who scored a career-high three goals. Freshman Dan Giuntini (Flora Park, N.Y.) recorded two goals on the afternoon. Sophomore Kevin Kornobis (Merrick, N.Y.), junior Skip Dunphy (Manhasset, N.Y.) and senior Kyle Ojakian (Cheshire, Conn.) scored one goal each. Ojakian also added three assists, while senior Chris Hoston (Garden City, N.Y.) was credited with one assist.

The Griffs led the game 2-1 at the halftime break, and went on to score four goals (to the Friar's two goals) in the third quarter to take a 6-3 advantage. PC rallied in the fourth quarter as Giuntini opened the scoring with his secongoal fo the game, just 50-seconds from the opening whistle. Kornobis's man-up goal at the 5:03 mark cut the Canisius lead to 6-5, but the Griffs restored their two-goal advantage at the 8:32 mark, on a tally from Jonathan Duggan. The Friars then rattled off three-straight goals to take their first lead of the game, 8-7 at the 11:16 mark. During that stretch PC got two man-up goals from Bosco and an even strength goal from Dunphy. Canisius tied the score, 8-8, with 49-seconds remaining in the game to force the overtime session. The Griffs took the win (9-8) in sudden-death overtime at the 3:09 mark, as Matt Baldauf netted his second goal of the game.

Senior goaltender John Farley (West Simsbury, Conn.) made seven saves in the Friar effort. Canisius netminder Seth Vath posted nine saves in goal for the teams' first MAAC win of the season.

 

 

Providence falls to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in the MAAC. The Friars will play St. Joseph's (Pa.) in MAAC action on Saturday, April 13 at 1:00 p.m., in Philadelphia, Pa.
