The Providence College men's lacrosse team fell to No. 12 Bryant on Tuesday, March 25 at the Ray Treacy Track Complex located in Providence, R.I. Providence moves to 3-6 (0-1) on the year while Bryant improves to 7-2 (1-0 NEC). Freshman Austin Goltz (Orchard Park, N.Y.) led the Friar offense with two goals.
Bryant opened the first quarter with back-to-back goals from Cody O'Donnell and Brett Baker to take a 2-0 lead (5:52). Senior Andrew Barton (Timonium, Md.) tallied the Friars' first goal of the night at the 3:10 mark (2-1). The remainder of the quarter was scoreless and Bryant carried a 2-1 advantage into the second 15 minutes of play.
Bryant took a 3-1 lead at 10:50 of the second quarter. Sophomore Nola Fillet (Rockville, Md.) found the back of the cage with 2:29 remaining in the quarter (3-2). Bryant closed the half with aman-up goal from Colin Dunster and the Bulldogs held a 4-2 advantage at the break.
Providence went on a 2-0 run to open the third quarter with back-to-back goals from freshmen Joseph Fitzpatrick (Rockville, Md.) and Trup Ortlieb (Drexel Hill, Pa.) to even the game at 4-4 (8:24).
Goltz pulled the Friars within one goal, 6-5, at the 4:46 mark with a snipe off of a feed from senior Sean Wright (Silver Spring, Md.). Bryant answered with a finish from O'Donnell with 4:03 left to play in regulation. Goltz struck again with 51 seconds remaining when he collected a deflection on a shot from Ortlieb (7-6), but that was as close as the Friars would get.
Senior Tyler Himes (Spring City, Pa.) played all 60 minutes in goal for the Friars and tallied 13 saves.
Providence returns to action on Saturday, March 29 when the Friars host BIG EAST foe St. John's at the Ray Treacy Track Complex in Providence, R.I. The Friars and Red Storm will face-off at 6:00 p.m. The evening contest will be broadcast nationwide on FOX Sports 1.
