WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team was defeated by Georgetown, 16-8, in its first BIG EAST game of the season on Saturday, March 16 in Washington, D.C. The Friars move to 5-1 (0-1 BIG EAST) while Georgetown improves to 3-3 (1-0 BIG EAST). Juniors Andrew Barton (Timonium, Md.) and Sean Wright (Silver Spring, Md.) each tallied two goals in the loss.
Georgetown jumped out to an early 1-0 lead at the 11:03 mark of the first quarter with a goal from Travis Comeau. The Friars answered with back-to-back goals from Barton (8:04) and Wright (5:13) to give Providence a 2-1 advantage. Georgetown's Reilly O'Connor found the back of the cage two times in the final five minutes of play to give the Hoyas a 3-2 advantage headed into the second quarter.
The Hoyas controlled the second quarter, out-scoring the Friars, 6-2. Gerogetown tallied its six goals consecutively, before Providence broke the streak at the 5:06 mark when sophomore Greg FitzMaurice (Huntington, N.Y.) buried a feed from Wright. Junior Tim Modesti (Fairport, N.Y.) notched his first goal of the season with 19 seconds left to play to close the half. The Hoyas held a 9-4 advantage at the half.
Wright opened the third quarter with his second goal of the game at the 13:45 mark (9-5). Georgetown out-scored the Friars 2-1 in the third and carried an 11-5 advantage into the final 15 minutes of play.
The fourth quarter was paced by Georgetown's offense who tallied five goals. Providence found the back of the cage three times with goals from junior Bryan Annecchino (Darien, Conn.), freshman Jake Newman (Mill Valley, Calif.) and Barton.
Junior Ryan Shaw (East Hampton, N.Y,) won 10-of-25 face-off attempts.
Defensively the Friars were successful on 18-of-21 clear attempts. Freshman goalie Jack Connelly (Kenilworth, Ill.) recorded all 60 minutes between the pipes and tallied 10 saves.
Providence returns to action on Tuesday, March 19 when the Friars host No. 11 Syracuse in its BIG EAST home opener. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I.
