Men's Lacrosse Defeats Sacred Heart In OT, 10-9
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College freshman Skip Dunphy scored at 2:30 of overtime to give the Friars a 10-9 victory over Sacred Heart in men's MAAC lacrosse action on Wednesday, March 15 at Providence, R.I. PC's Jeff Merklinger and Sacred Heart's Erick Perez each scored their team's only goal of the first quarter as the two squads were tied at 1-1 after 15 minutes of play. Merklinger led the Friars in the second quarter, scoring two more of his game-high four tallies, as PC outscored the Pioneers 4-0 in the second quarter to take a 5-1 lead at halftime. Jim Dooley scored to give the Friars a 9-5 lead with 7:36 remaining in the contest before the Sacred Heart offense came to life. The Pioneers scored four consecutive goals, including three in 35 seconds, to even the game at 9-9. With 1:30 expired in overtime, Dunphy took a feed from Dooley and fired a low shot under Sacred Heart goalie Mike Kelly for the win. With the victory, Providence improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in MAAC action, while Sacred Heart fell to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in league play. The Friars will return to action on Saturday, March 18 against Quinnipiac at PC's Glay Field at 2:00 p.m.
