The Providence College men's lacrosse team topped Vermont, 13-5, in its home opener on Sat., Feb. 23 at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars notched doubled figures in the scoring column for the second consecutive game, led by junior Sean Wright (Silver Spring, Md.) who has tallied hat-tricks in both Friar games this season. The win over the Catamounts improves Providence's overall record to 2-0 (0-0 BIG EAST).
With 10:21 left to play in the first quarter, the Friars trailed Vermont, 2-0. Wright ignited the Friar's offense with his first goal of the game at the 7:25 mark. His goal jumpstarted a 7-0 run which gave the Friars a 7-2 lead with 12:04 remaining in the third quarter. The Friars outscored the Catamounts, 6-3, for the remainder of the game.
Wright and Weber dominated the Friar's attack, combining for eight points on five goals and three assists. Four additional Friars tallied multi-goal games with two goals apiece including senior Josh Torres (Andover, Mass.), junior Andrew Barton (Timonium, Md.), sophomore Greg FitzMaurice (Huntington, N.Y.) and sophomore Robert Caffrey (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.).
Junior Ryan Shaw (East Hampton, N.Y.) finished 10-of-22 at the face-off "X" and collected a team high six ground balls.
On the defensive end, Providence limited Vermont to 28 shots. The team completed its first shutout quarter of the season after blanking the Catamounts, 3-0, in the second quarter. The Friars were effective in clears, finishing the game 23-of-25.
Freshman goalie, Jack Connelly (Kenilworth, Ill.) notched his second win of the season. Connelly played 57 minutes between the pipes and recorded 14 saves in the victory.
The last time Providence opened its season with a 2-0 record was in 2011 when the Friars posted back-to-back wins over Wagner (14-10) and Presbyterian (6-5).
Providence returns to action on Sat., March 2 when the Friars host Manhattan. The game is slated for 1:00 p.m. and will be played on Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I.
