STATEN ISLAND, N.Y - The Providence College men's lacrosse team opened its 2013 season with a 17-6 win over Wagner on Friday, Feb. 15th. The game was played at Hameline Field in Staten Island, N.Y. Senior attack JT Weber (West Hartford, Conn.) and junior attack Sean Wright (Silver Spring, Md.) each notched a hat-trick in the Friars' victory.
Eleven (11) different Friars notched goals in the victory, including four Friars with multi-goal games. Weber and Wright each recorded a game high three goals and dished out two assists. The duo combined for 10 of the Friars 25 points. Junior midfielder Andrew Barton (Timonium, Md.) and freshman attack Kevin Blair (Hingham, Mass.) also tallied multi-goal games with two goals apiece. Six additional Friars each notched one goal to propel Providence to victory. The Friars outshot Wagner, 57-33, and were able to convert on 4-6 extra-man opportunities.
Providence's 17 goals mark the most goals scored by the Friars in a single game since April 17, 2002 when the team recorded a 19-4 win over Holy Cross.
Providence won 18-26 face-offs, led by junior midfielder Ryan Shaw (East Hampton, N.Y.) who finished 16-19 at the face-off "X." The Friars also held the advantage in ground balls, 34-27. Shaw hauled in a game high 12 ground balls.
Freshman goalie Jack Connelly (Kenilworth, Ill.) earned his first collegiate win for the Friars after recording 50 minutes between the pipes, and recorded 13 saves in his collegiate debut.
Providence returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 23 when the Friars host Vermont in their season home opener. The game is slated for 1:00 p.m. and will be played on Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I.
